Hire technical account executives who can sell to engineers.
TekRecruiter is a technical account executive recruiting agency focused solely on technology and engineering roles at tech and SaaS companies. We know a technical buyer can tell in one call whether the seller understands the product, so you hire the AE who runs discovery at the architecture level, builds the business case and closes without an engineer on every call. What is a technical account executive?
A technical account executive (tech AE) is a quota-carrying seller for complex software who can hold the technical conversation with the buyer’s engineers and architects. They run the deal from discovery to close and bring in a sales engineer for the deepest questions, not every call. A standard account executive leans on the SE for anything technical; a technical account manager looks after existing customers and doesn’t carry a new-business quota.
- Technical account executive
- Carries the quota for a technical product and can hold the technical conversation without an engineer in the room.
- Account executive
- Owns the deal and the quota from discovery to close, and brings in technical help for the deep questions.
- OTE
- On-target earnings: base salary plus the commission earned at 100% of quota.
What companies hire technical account executives to do.
Technical AEs are the go-to-market role our clients ask us for most. These are the mandates behind those searches.
01 · Selling to technical buyers
Close deals where the buyer is an engineer.
Developer tools, infrastructure, data and AI products, where the champion is a staff engineer or architect and a generic pitch ends the conversation.
- Discovery at the level of the buyer’s stack and architecture
- Credibility with engineers without an SE on every call
- Salesforce
- Gong
- LinkedIn Sales Navigator
- Clari
02 · Enterprise deals
Run the long, multi-threaded cycle.
Six-figure deals with security reviews, procurement and several technical and economic buyers, forecast honestly and closed on a plan.
- Qualification frameworks such as MEDDICC applied, not recited
- Mutual action plans that survive procurement
- Salesforce
- Clari
- Gong
- DocuSign
- Highspot
03 · First sales hires
Be the first seller after the founder.
Early-stage companies moving from founder-led sales to a repeatable motion, with a seller who can learn the product deeply and help write the playbook.
- Comfort with an unfinished product and a thin pipeline
- Feedback from every deal routed to product
- HubSpot
- Apollo
- Gong
- Notion
04 · Business case
Translate the technology into money.
Turning a technical win into a business case the CFO signs: cost saved, risk reduced, engineering time returned, with numbers the buyer agrees with.
- ROI and total-cost models built with the champion
- Economic buyer engaged before the proposal
- Salesforce
- Excel
- Google Sheets
- PandaDoc
05 · Expansion
Grow the accounts you already won.
Land-and-expand selling into new teams, use cases and products inside existing customers, often where usage data shows the opening.
- Usage and adoption data read like pipeline
- Close partnership with customer success
- Salesforce
- Gainsight
- Snowflake
- Gong
06 · Early-career AEs
Hire technical talent into sales.
New graduates with technical degrees and MBAs starting in software sales, hired for learning speed and product curiosity, then ramped on a defined plan.
- Ramp plans with clear quota steps
- Promotion paths from mid-market to enterprise

What to know before you hire a technical account executive.
Whether or not you work with us, these are the questions worth settling before a technical AE search begins.
What does a technical account executive cost in 2026?
In TekRecruiter’s 2026 South Florida searches, new graduates and MBAs started at $120,000–$130,000 base, about $150,000 in on-target earnings. Senior technical AEs earned $180,000 base and $250,000–$300,000 OTE. New York runs about 20% higher for the same level. Full tables: 2026 Tech Salary & Rate Guide.
How should a technical AE’s plan be structured?
Most plans split OTE roughly 50/50 between base and commission, with some technical and enterprise roles closer to 60/40 in favor of base. What candidates weigh most is whether the quota is achievable: ask how many reps hit plan last year, and be ready to share it.
New grad or experienced seller?
New graduates with technical degrees or MBAs learn the product fast and cost less, but need a ramp plan and a manager who coaches. Experienced sellers bring a closing record and a sense of pace. For the first sales hire after the founder, experience almost always wins.
How should you interview a technical AE?
Run a discovery role-play with one of your engineers as the buyer, and see whether they ask about the architecture before they pitch. Then ask for a deal they lost and why. Verify attainment with the plan behind it: quota, deal sizes and what percentage of the team hit.
Technical AE or AE plus a sales engineer?
If your buyers are technical and deals are frequent, a technical AE covers more ground alone and keeps SEs for the deepest evaluations. If deals are large and the evaluation is heavy, pair an AE with a sales engineer. Most teams selling to engineers end up with both.
How do you choose a tech sales recruiter?
Ask how they verify attainment, and how they test technical credibility. A recruiter who can’t hold a conversation about your product can’t tell whether a seller can. Ask for their own pay and OTE data by market, not a survey.
Why technical AE searches go wrong.
A seller who can’t talk to engineers loses technical deals quietly. These are the misses we hear about most.
- 01
Great in the room, lost with engineers.
Strong closer, but the buyer’s architect stopped taking the calls.
- 02
Attainment nobody checked.
“140% of quota” on a plan that was cut in half.
- 03
A plan that didn’t add up.
OTE looked strong until the candidate modeled the quota.
- 04
Enterprise seller, early-stage company.
Used to a brand, a pipeline and a team behind every deal.
- Base salary range, junior to senior
- $120K–$180K
- On-target earnings, South Florida
- $150K–$300K
- New York over South Florida

We check the quota, then the technical conversation.
We’re technical people, and we walk every technical AE through deals they closed and lost: the buyer, the architecture behind the problem, the objection, and the plan the number was measured against. A seller who understood the product can explain it to us. Every candidate we present meets our HEART standard.
- Deals, in detail: size, cycle, stakeholders and how they won or why they lost.
- Technical credibility: can they explain the buyer’s stack, and why the product fit it?
- Attainment, verified: quota, attainment and plan structure, not a headline percentage.
- Comp fit: base, OTE and commission expectations aligned before the offer.

What we screen out.
The patterns that separate a technical seller from a seller with a technical product on the résumé.
Attainment without the plan
A percentage with no quota, territory or team comparison behind it.
Pitches before discovery
Technical buyers disengage when the seller leads with slides.
Needs the SE for every question
Can’t explain the product any deeper than the website does.
Inherited wins only
Closed renewals and inbound, never built a deal from first meeting.
Vague on lost deals
Blames price or timing, with no view on what they would change.
Wrong stage
Enterprise habits at a startup, or startup habits in a long enterprise cycle.

What is a technical account executive?
A technical account executive (tech AE) is a quota-carrying seller for complex software who can hold the technical conversation with the buyer’s engineers and architects. They run the deal from discovery to close and bring in a sales engineer only for the deepest questions.
How much does a technical account executive make in 2026?
In TekRecruiter’s 2026 South Florida searches, junior technical AEs, often new graduates or MBAs, started at $120,000–$130,000 base, about $150,000 in on-target earnings. Senior AEs earned $180,000 base and $250,000–$300,000 OTE. See the 2026 Tech Salary & Rate Guide.
How much do technical AEs make in New York compared with Miami?
In our 2026 searches, New York ran about 20% above South Florida for the same level. In Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, senior technical AEs earned about $180,000 base and $250,000–$300,000 OTE.
What is OTE?
On-target earnings: base salary plus the commission a seller earns at 100% of quota. Technical AE offers are usually compared on OTE and on how achievable the quota is.
What is the difference between a technical account executive and a technical account manager?
A technical account executive sells: they carry a new-business or expansion quota and close deals. A technical account manager looks after existing customers after the sale, handling technical relationships, adoption and escalations, and usually doesn’t carry a new-business quota.
What is the difference between a technical AE and a sales engineer?
The technical AE owns the deal and the quota, and covers much of the technical conversation. The sales engineer owns the technical win: demos, proofs of concept and architecture reviews. On complex evaluations they work as a pair.
Do you recruit early-career technical AEs?
Yes, including new graduates with technical degrees and MBAs starting in software sales, as well as mid-market and senior enterprise sellers. Early-career AEs started at $120,000–$130,000 base in our 2026 South Florida searches.
What is the HEART standard?
HEART is the standard we screen every candidate against, beyond skills: high agency, execution, accountability, resourcefulness and transparency. It describes people who take ownership, turn ideas into results and move the business forward. See the standard.
